New Mexico drivers can enroll in defensive driving for several reasons. Often, drivers take defensive driving, or traffic school, to follow a court order after a traffic violation. Others enroll for a points reduction or to earn lower auto insurance rates.

Defensive Driving Courses in New Mexico

In New Mexico, drivers who have received a moving violation conviction will have points added to their driving record. Earn too many points, and you’ll face suspension of your license. If you’re in danger of license suspension, or you already have a suspended license, you’ll need to enroll in defensive driving to reduce your points and avoid suspension or earn a reinstatement. Note that if you’ve already been suspended and have submitted your formal application for reinstatement to the court, you’ll need to complete your defensive driving course within 90 days of applying.

New Mexico drivers also often enroll in defensive driving due to traffic violations. Typically, drivers are given a court order to enroll in defensive driving if this is the case. In some cases, drivers may also be given the option to dismiss their ticket and related points by completing defensive driving.

New Mexico Defensive Driving Course Eligibility

If you’ve earned too many points on your New Mexico driving record, it’s a good idea to enroll in defensive driving for a points reduction. However, you’ll need to make sure that you’re eligible. Typically, New Mexico requires the following criteria for points reduction with defensive driving:

Whether you’re completing defensive driving to reduce points, dismiss a ticket, or as a part of a court order, it’s a good idea to verify your eligibility. If you’re completing the course for a point reduction, contact the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles to verify your eligibility. Otherwise, you’ll need to seek permission from the court for dismissal or court-ordered defensive driving. Remember that if you enroll in and even complete defensive driving without verifying eligibility or ensuring you’ve received approval, you may not get credit for the course.

New Mexico Traffic Ticket Dismissal with Defensive Driving

Drivers in New Mexico can use defensive driving to remove points from their driving record, but some drivers can have points dismissed before they can be added. Some courts in New Mexico will grant ticket and point dismissal on a case by case basis for moving violations. If you’re interested in having your ticket dismissed for defensive driving, you must discuss the issue with the court and, potentially, the presiding judge.

If you’re granted a dismissal with defensive driving, you must meet all of the requirements set out by the court. Defensive driving is a privilege, and if you do not meet the requirements, your ticket will not be dismissed. Typically, there is a time limit in which you’ll need to complete the course, and you may be required to manually submit your certificate of completion to the court as well.
