Des Moines is a city located in Polk County, Iowa. In its 2019 annual ranking, US News and World Report ranked the city as one of the best places to live. That’s certainly a great distinction to bestow upon a city. However, the city has the less favorable distinction of having a high number of distracted driving crashes.

In 2019, there were a total of 1,099 car crashes in Iowa. Three of those crashes resulted in fatalities. In 2018, there were 1,091 crashes and nine fatalities.

Most of these crashes are attributed to drivers using cellphones or other electronic devices at the time of the crash. It’s becoming more common for drivers to talk and text while driving. And more recently, drivers will also film videos while they’re driving.

Distracted driving is deadly. It only takes a second for an accident to occur. In 2018, more than 2,800 people were killed in distracted driving accidents. And an estimated 400,000 people were injured by distracted drivers.
