Newport News is an independent city in Virginia. The city is steeped in history, and even its name has an important tie to history. The city is named after Christopher Newport, a captain of one of the 3 ships that carried Jamestown settlers to the New World. These days, Newport News residents spend more time in cars than in ships.

Drive Smart Virginia, an annual report by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, shared some alarming traffic fatality data. In 2019, there were 827 traffic fatalities in the state. In addition to the fatalities, 180 people were injured daily in the state as a result of traffic accidents.

Based on the research, most of these accidents were caused by bad driving habits. Using a cellphone while driving, speeding, and distracted driving were among the top accident causes.

Have you received a traffic ticket in Newport News? If so, a defensive driving course can possibly get the ticket dismissed. The course can also help you improve your driving skills. Taking a defensive driving course is one way to make the streets of Virginia safer.
