Wilmington is a port city located in North Carolina. The city is also the county seat of New Hanover County. With a population of 123,744, the city is the eighth most populated city in the state.
Wilmington was founded by English settlers along the Cape Fear River. The city is named after Spencer Compton, First Earl of Wilmington. Before its current name, the city was called New Carthage, then New Liverpool, and even later still Newton.
Wilmington is known for its riverfront views, and was named Best American Riverfront by USA Today in 2014. As for North Carolina in general, the state has improved its driving image.
In 2019, traffic fatalities in the state decreased by 4.4 percent. This is a significant decrease, as it’s close to twice the national rate.
