Norman is a city located in Oklahoma, and it’s also the seat of Cleveland county. Have you ever wondered how the city got its name, Norman? Well, it’s an interesting part of Oklahoma history.

In 1870, Oklahoma was officially opened to white settlement. Prior to that, it was just a tent city where all its residents lived in tents. The engineer hired to survey the land was named Abner Norman. As a joke, the surveyor crew burned the words Norman’s Camp into a local tree. That name was adopted by early settlers, and they called the city Norman.

It would probably surprise Norman to know that his namesake is now home to 122,837 residents. The area is known for its agriculture, and there are also gas and oil wells nearby.

Norman is about average when it comes to traffic accidents. The city is located in Cleveland county, which had 18 fatal car crashes in 2019. That’s not terrible, but the county had a total of 4,652 crashes and 1,475 injuries.

The traffic statistics show that Norman residents could possibly benefit from a defensive driving course. If you’ve received a traffic ticket in Norman, a defensive driving course can possibly get the ticket dismissed. Even if you haven’t received a ticket, a defensive driving course can make you a more confident driver.
